Longoria suffers fractured finger on HBP: 'This sucks'

San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria was diagnosed with a fractured fifth metacarpal after being hit on his left hand by a pitch in Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins.

Longoria, who initially stayed in the game after getting hit by Dan Straily's 89-mph fastball in the fourth inning, will likely miss considerable time, though the club hasn't provided a firm timetable for his return. (Giants ace Madison Bumgarner missed nearly 10 weeks after fracturing the same bone in his non-throwing hand in March.)

"It was a pretty traditional break," Longoria told Glenn Sattell of MLB.com. "It's unfortunate. We're just going to wait and see what the plan is. I don't know if we're going to have surgery or not. Obviously, they're looking for the best solution right now.

"But this sucks. We've had our fair share of bumps and bruises this year. It's part of the game. It's unavoidable."

Longoria entered Thursday's game hitting .247/.276/.435 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 66 games this season.

"My job now is just to work towards getting healthy and be as supportive as I can in the process," Longoria said. "I think we'll have a little bit more information in terms of the plan in the next couple of days. Obviously, the goal is to decide something as soon as possible and get going in the right direction; whether that's put a cast on it and just let it sit or have some sort of surgery and go that route."
