Brewers' Peralta enters record books with 13-K debut, flirts with no-no
Now that's how you make an entrance.
Milwaukee Brewers rookie Freddy Peralta dazzled in his major-league debut Sunday with a nearly record-setting performance against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The 21-year-old took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and exited after striking out 13 batters over 5 2/3 shutout frames while allowing just a single base hit.
Peralta's 13 strikeouts set a new Brewers record for a big-league debut, breaking Steve Woodard's mark of 12 that was set in 1997. He also became only the eighth pitcher since 1908 to record at least 12 Ks in his debut, and just the fifth with 13-plus strikeouts.
Date | Pitcher | Team | IP | K | BB | R | Gm. Sc. |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4/25/37 | Cliff Melton | Giants | 9 | 13 | 2 | 3 | 76 |
9/22/54 | Karl Spooner | Dodgers | 9 | 15 | 3 | 0 | 93 |
9/5/71 | J.R. Richard | Astros | 9 | 15 | 3 | 3 | 75 |
6/8/10 | Stephen Strasburg | Nationals | 7 | 14 | 0 | 2 | 75 |
5/13/18 | Freddy Peralta | Brewers | 5.2 | 13 | 2 | 0 | 81 |
Only Peralta and the Brooklyn Dodgers' Karl Spooner in 1954 managed to strike out at least 13 without allowing a run in their debuts, per Baseball Reference.
In addition, the Dominican is the first pitcher to record double-digit strikeouts in a debut without allowing a run since Matt Harvey punched out 11 in 2012 for the New York Mets.
Making things even more special for Peralta was the fact that his parents were in the stands at Coors Field watching his epic performance - the first time they had ever seen their son pitch professionally.
Peralta, the Brewers' ninth-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was averaging nearly 12 strikeouts per nine innings at Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to his call-up.
