Red Sox sign Tommy Layne out of MLBPA free-agent camp

It looks as though the free-agent camp being run by the Major League Baseball Players Association is actually working.

Left-hander Tommy Layne was signed out of the camp by the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, according to MLBPA executive director Tony Clark. Layne's minor-league deal does not include an invite to MLB spring training, reports Pete Abraham.

The free-agent camp was opened prior to clubs reporting for first full workouts earlier this month. The camp was created to give unsigned free agents a place to workout during what has been a slow offseason for player signings.

Layne, 33, appeared in 19 games with the New York Yankees last season and was previously a member of the Red Sox from 2014-15. He owns a career ERA of 3.61 in 216 big-league appearances.
