Yankees GM: Top prospect Torres will get chance at starting job this spring

The New York Yankees are going to give their top prospect, Gleyber Torres, the opportunity of a lifetime.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Max Wildstein of the Sporting News that Torres, the No. 2 prospect in baseball, will have a shot at a starting job during spring training.

The 21-year-old infielder could slot into the lineup as either a second or third baseman - both positions the team needs to fill.

As it stands, Ronald Torreyes is projected to start for the Yankees at second, while fellow rookie Miguel Andujar could fill the third-base void.

Torres hit .287/.383/.480 with seven home runs, 14 doubles, and 34 RBIs across two minor-league levels last season before sustaining a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his non-throwing elbow. The youngster underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery in June.
