Report: Mets 'very interested' in Bryan Shaw; eyeing other relievers
The New York Mets are hoping 2017 was an anomaly, and are looking to bring in some free-agent reinforcements for the bullpen.
The top target is reportedly former Cleveland Indians right-hander Bryan Shaw, as the club is "very interested" in signing the veteran hurler, sources told the New York Post's Mike Puma.
New York's gaze isn't focused solely on Shaw. They're also reportedly looking at Joe Smith, Mike Minor, and Addison Reed, among others. Shaw and Smith are especially interesting, as both worked with new Mets manager Mickey Callaway while playing for Cleveland.
In five seasons with the Indians - the exact same tenure as Callaway - Shaw went 21-22 with a 3.11 ERA with 333 strikeouts over 358 2/3 innings. He was a workhorse in Cleveland, and would be expected to carry a heavy load wherever he winds up.
With Jeurys Familia, Jerry Blevins, and A.J. Ramos already in the fold, Shaw and/or one of his peers would provide much-needed late-inning depth. The Mets owned the National League's highest bullpen ERA (4.82) in 2017.
