Iwakuma says Mariners have offered him new deal
The Seattle Mariners have been the most active team this offseason, making three trades and signing a few minor-league deals, and it appears they've been doing some other work, too.
Seattle has made an offer to free agent Hisashi Iwakuma, the pitcher told The Japan Times on Monday.
"It is not a done deal but I have received an offer," Iwakuma explained. "Hopefully I will be able to make a positive announcement soon."
The 36-year-old spent the past six seasons with the Mariners, posting a 63-39 record with a 3.42 ERA, but only made six starts last season because of shoulder issues which required arthroscopic surgery at the end of September.
"I don't know when I'll be back but my hope is that it will be in time for the start of the new season," the right-hander said.
Iwakuma had a 2018 club option valued at $10 million declined by the Mariners at the beginning of the month.
