Their search for a new manager has led the Boston Red Sox to the desert.

The Red Sox have reportedly asked the Arizona Diamondbacks for permission to interview current bench coach Ron Gardenhire for their open managerial position, reports The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

The club is also reportedly planning to interview former major-league infielder and current Houston Astros bench coach Alex Cora for the vacant gig, who is apparently Boston's top candidate for the opening, sources told Rosenthal.

Voted American League Manager of the Year in 2010, Gardenhire spent 13 years with the Minnesota Twins from 2002-14. In his first season, Gardenhire led the Twins to the ALCS where they were eliminated by the Anaheim Angels in five games. Minnesota would go on to make the postseason another five times under Gardenhire, though the club would never progress past the ALDS.

Gardenhire finished his Twins tenure with a 1068-1039 managerial record.

The Red Sox dismissed skipper John Farrell on Wednesday, two days after they were eliminated by the Astros in the ALDS.
