Trevor Rosenthal's season is over.

The St. Louis Cardinals closer was moved to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, the team announced.

Rosenthal was placed on the 10-day DL last week with right elbow irritation and recently consulted Dr. Neal ElAttrache for a second opinion on the injury, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.

ElAttrache is a notable Tommy John surgeon.

Rosenthal, 27, had been closing games for the Cardinals since taking over the job in mid-July from Seung Hwan Oh.

Across 50 games, the right-hander converted 11-of-13 saves while posting a 3.40 ERA and a rate of 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Over the course of his six seasons in the majors, Rosenthal has 121 saves to his credit.
