Blue Jays shut down Sanchez for rest of season
Aaron Sanchez's injury-plagued year has finally reached its conclusion.
The Toronto Blue Jays announced Sunday that the right-hander, who's battled blister issues all year, has been officially shut down for the season.
According to John Lott of The Athletic, Sanchez's season came to an end not because of a blister, but instead due to a "pulley strain" in his right middle finger.
The decision to shut down Sanchez doesn't come as a complete surprise given the disappointing Blue Jays are not in contention for a playoff spot. On Saturday, manager John Gibbons told Sportsnet 590 The Fan's Mike Wilner that while Sanchez's rehab was "progressing," the clock was ticking on a major-league return.
Sanchez, who led the American League with a 3.00 ERA during his breakout All-Star campaign a season ago, made just eight starts for the Blue Jays this year. In between those limited appearances, the 25-year-old made four separate trips to the disabled list while battling ongoing blister-related problems on his right hand. In April, he was forced to undergo a minor surgical procedure that removed part of a fingernail, but it failed to correct the issue.
Sanchez finishes his abbreviated 2017 season having posted a 1-3 record with a 4.25 ERA, 5.73 FIP, 1.722 WHIP, and 24 strikeouts to 20 walks in only 36 innings pitched.
