Report: Athletics asked by multiple teams to sit Gray

What could be the last start of Sonny Gray's career with the Oakland Athletics is scheduled for Sunday, but not if the teams looking to acquire the 27-year-old right-hander have anything to say about it.

Multiple suitors for the Athletics most-prized trade asset have asked the team not to start Gray Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, and Oakland is willing to oblige, according to a report from Bob Klapisch of USA Today.

If the Athletics do end up agreeing to a deal to ship out the starter, that would make Gray's last start with the team July 25, when he went six innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing four runs - all unearned - on five hits and two walks.

Among others, the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Milwaukee Brewers appear to be the most likely landing spots for Gray.

Scratching Gray from his start doesn't necessarily mean a deal gets done prior to Sunday's game. However, it does keep Gray's value high as he'd be available to make a start immediately after being acquired, which could mean an extra game on his new roster for a would-be contender.

Gray's 2017 season ERA sits at 3.43 with a 3.24 FIP over 16 starts and he is eligible for arbitration the next two seasons.
