Report: Yankees making progress on trade for Gray, Alonso
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman might be on the verge of a second blockbuster in as many weeks.
The Yankees are reportedly making progress toward a deal that would land Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray and first baseman Yonder Alonso, multiple sources told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com on Tuesday.
It was reported earlier Tuesday that Oakland is prioritizing young center fielders in trade talks, and Yankees prospect Estevan Florial is among those targets.
With CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, and potentially Masahiro Tanaka hitting free agency at the end of this season, the Yankees will need help in the rotation. Cashman said he's looking at acquiring players with multiple years of control, and Gray checks that box. The 27-year-old is arbitration eligible for the next two years before hitting free agency after the 2019 season.
Gray, who is starting Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, would help form a strong front three in the rotation with Tanaka and Luis Severino, while Alonso would help solve the Yankees' void at first base.
