St. Louis Cardinals utility man Jose Martinez had to leave the dugout Friday against the Chicago Cubs in the eighth inning after he was drilled on the bench by a foul ball off the bat of teammate Matt Carpenter.
Martinez was immediately taken to the clubhouse at Wrigley Field.
On a 1-0 count, Carpenter pulled Carl Edwards Jr.'s 81-mph curveball into the visitors' dugout where it caught Martinez, sending him to the clubhouse to be evaluated and treated by a trainer, according to the St. Louis Post-Disptach's Derrick Goold. It's unclear if the 28-year-old was severely injured on the play.
Carpenter's at-bat finished with a double to right field on the very next pitch.
