Astros double in 52nd straight game to own 2nd-longest streak since 1913

The Houston Astros just can't stop hitting doubles.

In the second inning of Wednesday's contest against the Seattle Mariners, Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez doubled off starter James Paxton, extending his team's current streak of consecutive games with a double to 52 - surpassing the 1999 Braves for the second-longest streak since at least 1913.

The Astros entered Wednesday's game having gone 34-17 over the stretch of their doubles streak, which began against the Indians on May 21. Gonzalez's double on Wednesday was the 141st individual two-base hit by an Astro in the last 52 games, and they've averaged 2.7 doubles per game as a unit over this stretch. At least two doubles have been hit in 38 of the 52 games, including a stretch of seven doubles in three straight contests from July 2-5.

Twelve different Astros players have recorded at least one double in the last 52 games; individually, Jose Altuve leads the way with 19.

Houston has a bit of work ahead of them in order to set the all-time record for consecutive games with a double. That's held by the 1996 Cleveland Indians, who doubled in 75 consecutive contests from May 30-Aug. 19 of that year.
