Mets' Wheeler after latest injury: Humans 'are not meant to pitch'

Richard Mackson / USA TODAY Sports

New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with biceps tendinitis - much to the chagrin of Mets fans who've seen a bulk of the roster lost to injury this year - and the oft-injured starter expressed a dose of frustration and helplessness to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Human beings are "not meant to pitch," the 27-year-old Wheeler told DiComo, while adding, "We're not meant to throw how we do."

Wheeler, who hadn't pitched since 2014 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, had logged 66 1/3 innings with the Mets this year in his return, posting a 5.29 ERA and 4.84 FIP prior to hitting the DL.

Following the latest injury, he defended New York's much-criticized training staff, saying they're "doing the best job they can," before adding, "Sometimes, you just can't help guys getting hurt," according to Marc Carig of Newsday.

While Wheeler is correct in that the complexities of pitching mechanics are inherently unhealthy, the Mets have been hit especially hard - at seemingly every position - which has been a sore spot for the fan base. Their disabled list currently includes Jeurys Familia, Neil Walker, David Wright, Asdrubal Cabrera, Juan Lagares, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, and Tommy Milone, while their frustrated manager, Terry Collins, has even been asked to stop discussing injuries with reporters.
