Report: Melancon among Nationals' closer targets
A quick reunion may be the solution to the Washington Nationals' closer crisis.
Still without a bona fide ninth-inning arm despite manager Dusty Baker's plea for bullpen help earlier this month, San Francisco Giants right-hander Mark Melancon is among the names the club is considering as possible closer targets, according to FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman.
Pittsburgh Pirates southpaw Tony Watson, Kansas City Royals flamethrower Kelvin Herrera, and Chicago White Sox hurler David Robertson are also on the Nationals' list, Heyman adds.
Reports earlier this month suggested Washington was watching Herrera closely, but Melancon's familiarity with the Nationals could make him a top priority for the club.
Acquired from the Pirates last season by the Nationals just ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline, Melancon impressed in his half-season in the nation's capital, crafting a 1.82 ERA and converting 17 saves in 18 opportunities.
He's struggled to perform to that same quality in San Francisco, however, posting a 4.82 ERA in 20 appearances and recording just 11 of 15 possible saves.
