Scherzer fetched hot dog for Willie Mays before gem vs. Giants
When Willie Mays gets a hankering for a hot dog, everyone - even a two-time Cy Young Award winner with a start to prepare for - stops what they're doing.
On Wednesday, as Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer ambled through the clubhouse hours before his start at AT&T Park, he was stopped by manager Dusty Baker for an introduction to the San Francisco Giants icon, who'd happened to stop by and was feeling a bit peckish.
"He's the Cy Young," Baker said as Scherzer shook the 86-year-old's hand, according to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.
"We could share a hot dog," Mays said.
Scherzer, a four-time All-Star, dutifully offered to bring him one.
"Hurry back," said Mays.
Shortly thereafter, a clubhouse attendant - sent by Scherzer - brought Mays a hot dog.
"They're kind of shy, kind of like little kids when you see a legend like Willie Mays. I feel very fortunate to have been with him quite a few years, played against him for a while," Baker said. "He's one of the greats of the game, but he's still regular and one of them. That's why I think it makes it easier for the guys to come around and ask him for pictures and stuff. He's very, very approachable."
As it happens, Scherzer authored one of his finest starts of the season that night. He fanned 11 while allowing just one run on five hits and no walks to lift his club to a 3-1 win in his first complete game of 2017.
