Somewhere, the always irascible former New York Yankees skipper Billy Martin is raising a glass to Joe Girardi's antics on Saturday.
Girardi put on a rare show of emotion at Tropicana Field in a game that was already getting testy thanks to some shenanigans in the hit-by-pitch department. After his pitching coach Larry Rothschild was tossed by home-plate umpire Scott Barry during a mound visit, Girardi came out to discuss the matter, only to be quickly given the boot himself.
But the 52-year-old manager wasn't leaving without a fight, and he let Barry know what he thought of the afternoon's strike zone by storming over to home plate and covering it in dirt before leaving to join Rothschild in the clubhouse.
