Jason Grilli's flame with the Toronto Blue Jays has been extinguished.

The team announced Tuesday the right-hander has been designated for assignment.

Grilli left some parting words above his locker in the Blue Jays' clubhouse after learning he'd been DFA'd:

Grilli, 40, posted a 6.97 ERA in 26 appearances for the Blue Jays this season, averaging 10 strikeouts and 3.9 walks per nine innings.

The veteran was acquired by Toronto in a trade with the Atlanta Braves in May of 2016 and posted a respectable 3.64 ERA and 1.12 WHIP for the Blue Jays last season.

In corresponding moves, the Blue Jays recalled right-hander Chris Smith, optioned outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. to the minors, and activated outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from the disabled list.
