Highlight reel: 3 other times Almora Jr. wowed us with his defense
Albert Almora Jr. made the play of the night on Tuesday when he preserved a Chicago Cubs victory over their division rival St. Louis Cardinals with an incredible leaping catch in center field, which he later dedicated to his mother on her birthday.
Although the 22-year-old outfielder has only appeared in 48 games in the big leagues, his catch on Tuesday wasn't an unfamiliar feat for the talented first-round pick from the 2012 draft.
Watch out Kevin Kiermaier and Kevin Pillar, because here are three other times Almora Jr. has made an astonishing defensive play.
Just over a week ago during spring training, Almora Jr. continued to stake his claim as a member of the Cubs regular-season rotation in the outfield when he showed just how good he is at tracking down a ball to rob Austin Jackson of a hit. After running what seemed like a country mile to get to the high fly ball in left-center, Almora leaped into the air to make a fantastic catch before crashing into the fence. Sorry Austin, better luck next time.
It may not have been the most graceful catch of his young career, but Almora Jr. made quite a play against the Cincinnati Reds on Oct. 2, 2016. After Eugenio Suarez hammered a Mike Montgomery pitch to deep center field, Almora Jr. looked like a whirling dervish as he twisted mid-air to catch the hard liner. Upon landing, he barrel-rolled backward into the outfield fence. Degree of difficulty: 9.0.
Catch probability, meet Almora Jr. With only a 21 percent chance of actually making the catch on a Buster Posey line drive at AT&T Park in the ninth inning of a tied contest between the Cubs and San Francisco Giants in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, Almora Jr. broke Statcast. The youngster, playing right field, sped into the corner to snag Posey's drive with an amazing diving attempt for a double play. The Cubs lost the game, but won the series.
