Minnesota Twins right-hander Trevor May announced that he'll need Tommy John surgery Wednesday to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

May suffered the injury earlier this month while pitching in an exhibition game against the American team prior to the World Baseball Classic. He was diagnosed with a torn UCL but sought out a second opinion before deciding on surgery.

The 27-year-old posted a 5.27 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 44 relief appearances last season.
