The Philadelphia Phillies were two outs away from spring training immortality, and then the wheels came off.
Vince Velasquez, Jake Thompson, Colton Murray and Michael Mariot combined to no-hit the Baltimore Orioles for 8 1/3 innings on Thursday before Mariot allowed a one-out single to Chris Dickerson to spoil the night.
PITCHER | IP | H | R | ER | BB | SO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Velasquez | 3.2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 6 |
Thompson | 2.1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
Murray | 1.2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
Mariot | 1.1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 0 |
Orioles second baseman Sean Coyle followed with a two-run home run off Mariot to make it 2-2. Mariot would eventually finish off the inning, with the game ending in a tie.
There's been 24 spring training no-hitters in history, with the Atlanta Braves collecting the last one when nine different pitchers combined to no-hit the Houston Astros in 10 innings in 2015.
That game also finished in a 2-2 tie.
