Report: Giants add Hill on minor-league deal
The San Francisco Giants have added some much-needed infield depth, agreeing to a minor-league deal with Aaron Hill, sources told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Hill could earn $2 million if he makes the Giants' roster, as well as $1.45 million in potential incentives, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.
The veteran 34-year-old has bounced around the last few years, most recently as a member of the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers in 2016. He remained productive in 125 games for both clubs, hitting .262/.336/.378 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs. He was most effective with the Brewers, posting a .283/.359/.421 line in 78 games.
Hill should provide the Giants with versatility in the infield and may be particularly useful at third base, as the team enters 2017 with little depth at the position. Eduardo Nunez is currently slated as the team's third baseman, and Hill has some experience at the hot corner, having started 157 career games there.
In 12 major-league seasons, Hill's won two Silver Slugger Awards and earned an All-Star nod with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009. His best years came with the Blue Jays from 2007-09, when he owned a .285/.331/.464 slash line over 373 games.
