Game 7 tickets reach jaw-dropping prices
There's plenty of things people can buy with the money some fans are spending on tickets for Game 7 of the World Series.
That list includes a car (or a few cars, depending on the types of beaters you want), a down payment on a home, and - in some instances - more than a year's worth of college tuition.
Entering Game 6 between the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs, the average ticket price for a potential Game 7 was around $1,800. But as the Cubs mounted a comeback, the most expensive ticket for the historic game has sold for $19,500 on StubHub, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.
"A pair of seats is costing fans $2,000 per ticket, after fees," said Patrick Ryan, co-founder of Eventellect, a resale market ticket distribution company. "That is more than the 'get in price' for eight of the past 10 Super Bowls. It's unique, but it's the number most industry insiders would expect the get in for a Cubs Game 7 to be."
Tickets 10 to 15 rows up at Progressive Field, which typically sell for $300, are going for $4,500.
When Cubs veteran catcher David Ross, who's playing his final MLB game Wednesday, was informed of the ticket prices, he jokingly saw an opportunity to make some money on the side.
"Can I sell mine?" Ross said. "I'm going to be looking for a job after tomorrow."
The increase in ticket prices isn't only within the confines of the stadium.
Two hotels in downtown Cleveland, The Kimpton Schofield Hotel and Hampton Inn, have sold out. Usually, the rooms sell for between $130-$160 a night, but rooms at the Kimpton sold for roughly $700 per room, while the Hampton's sold at $1,500 per room.
