NL wild card locked in three-way tie
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a tie.
Following Tuesday's results, and with two weeks left in the regular season, the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, and San Francisco Giants are in a three-way tie for top spot in the National League wild card.
As of Wednesday morning, all three clubs have identical records at 80-71.
The Cardinals and Giants both came away with victories, while the Mets floundered against the bottom-feeding Atlanta Braves.
In the event that all three teams finish in a tie to end the regular season, each club will be assigned A, B, or C designations based on head-to-head records. St. Louis and New York both won their season series over the Giants and split their own. In a tie between the Mets and Cardinals, the top seed would go to the team with the best record within their own division, which would be the Cardinals as of Wednesday.
Team A would then host Team B on Oct. 3, with the winner claiming the top wild-card spot. The loser would then play Team C the following night, and the winner would assume the second wild-card spot.
