Pierzynski hints at retirement in strange postgame comments

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

A.J. Pierzynski handed out cigars and hugged his teammates after the Atlanta Braves walk-off win Saturday against the New York Mets, but it remains to be seen if this was in fact his last game in the majors.

"I don't know whats going to happen, I don't know what tomorrow's going to bring but if that's it, it was fun," he said after the game.

The 39-year-old catcher hit a single in the bottom of the 10th inning and was replaced with a pinch runner. Shortly after, he was seen hugging his teammates in the Braves dugout leading to some conflicting reports he was going to retire immediately after the game.

Pierzynski's odd comments come on the heels of a collision at home plate with Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores, who left the game in the eighth inning with a bruised neck after being thrown out at home by outfielder Nick Markakis.

If this is his last game, Pierzynski's colorful personality will be remembered throughout baseball. The 18-year veteran has played for seven different teams in his career, and is one of just 10 catchers all time with over 2,000 hits and one of four with over 400 doubles.
