5 facts to know about super prospect Yoan Moncada

Gary A. Vasquez / USA TODAY Sports

If you thought the Boston Red Sox were running out of ammo, you were wrong.

With Major League Baseball's No. 1 overall prospect Yoan Moncada expected to be called up on Friday, the Red Sox will welcome one of the most dynamic and colorful players in the minors to the big club.

Before he dons a major-league jersey for the first time, here's five things you need to know about Moncada:

He received a huge signing bonus at 19 years old

At the ripe age of 19, Moncada became a member of the Red Sox after he agreed to a whopping $31.5 million signing bonus in early 2015.

The Cuban stud didn't take long to ascend to the top of MLB's prospect rankings, but he quickly made headlines with his first press conference as a professional baseball player.

"My goal is to find out if I can make it to the big leagues in a year," he said through a translator during a news conference, a day after his agreement was finalized

He was close, making it to the majors in one year and three months of service in the minors.

He loves his custom cars

The Red Sox prospect didn't wait until he got to the majors to make a few big purchases.

Moncada is the proud owner of at least three custom-built cars, and if you look closely enough, he has his own "YM" logo on them. Given the signing bonus he was given as a youngster, you figure he'll be OK financially.

He's played 10 games at 3B

The Red Sox expect Moncada to take over third-base duties, given Travis Shaw and Aaron Hill's struggles there.

Although he'll need to make sure he hits in order to stay in the lineup, Moncada, a second baseman by trade, has only played 10 games at third base for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, making three errors in 33 opportunities.

That said, he has a knack for making the flashy plays look easy.

Now we'll see if he can make the routine ones, too.

He's only 21

Yes, he's a pup, but he's already a beast.

At 21-years-old, Moncada is listed at 6-foot-2, 205-pounds, but he doesn't look like it. The youngster is a physical specimen, and if he doesn't perform, at least he'll look good off the bus.

He's the prototypical top prospect

You name it, he does it.

Moncada is fast, hits for power, hits from both sides of the plate, has an arm, plays stellar defense, looks the part, and overall just fits the bill of what you expect MLB's top prospect to look like.

In a little more than a year in the minors, Moncada stole 94 bases and slashed .287/.395/.480, belting 23 homers and driving in 100 runs in the process.

In his only opportunity in the spotlight, he stole the show at the 2016 MLB Futures Game, winning MVP honors after going 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, a run scored, and a stolen base.
