Fan draped in U.S. flag storms field mid-play at Safeco
Running onto the field of play during a Major League Baseball game is about as un-American as it gets. Unless, of course, the perpetrator happens be draped in the Stars and Stripes.
Such was the case Saturday night at Safeco Field, where one patriotic fan hopped the left-field fence in the top of the fifth inning and stormed the field mid-play, nearly interfering with Seattle Mariners outfielder Seth Smith as he tracked down a fly ball off the bat of Matt Carpenter.
In fairness to the fan, though, it doesn't look as though Smith called him off.
"I saw him," Smith said, "but I threw it in and thankfully it didn't affect the play."
The fan, who at least had the decency to remove his shoes before getting in his fill of criminal trespassing, was tackled by stadium security moments later and taken off the field in handcuffs.
