Stanton's slump continues with golden sombrero
Giancarlo Stanton's recent struggles at the plate continued in Wednesday's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies, with the 26-year-old going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts - tying a personal game high - in the Miami Marlins' 4-2 loss at Citizens Bank Park.
Stanton, who donned the golden sombrero for the 14th time in his career (and second time this season), is now 4-for-41 (.098) since May 7, striking out in 42.6 percent of his plate appearances over that span.
Though the three-time All-Star managed a solid .859 OPS (127 OPS+) through his first 37 games this year, Stanton has been remarkably unproductive against the Phillies, a team many predicted to be the worst in baseball in 2016. Following his performance Wednesday, Stanton is 1-for-18 with 12 strikeouts, three walks, and just one homer in six games against Philadelphia.
Don Mattingly, the Marlins' manager, noted that Stanton was fine after colliding with center fielder Marcell Ozuna while chasing down a foul ball Sunday, but the talented right fielder is now 0-for-10 with nine strikeouts since the incident.
"They both came in today a little sore but feeling good," Mattingly told MLB.com's Joe Frisaro on Monday. "I felt pretty good leaving (Washington) because neither one of them was really in the training room."
