Less than 24 hours after taking Dante Bichette's son, Bo, in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, the Toronto Blue Jays grabbed themselves another progeny, selecting Notre Dame product Cavan Biggio - the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio - with the 162nd overall pick Friday.

Cavan, the Philadelphia Phillies' 29th-round pick back in 2013, emerged as one of the top-100 draft-eligible NCAA ballplayers following a strong junior year in which he hit .311/.473/.454 with four homers and 12 doubles while going 14-for-14 in stolen-base attempts for the Irish. In his three years at South Bend, the 6-foot-1 second baseman hit .272/.406/.425 with 56 extra-base hits and a 16.4 percent walk rate in 167 games.

Still, while scouts rave about his high baseball IQ and feel for the game, Cavan doesn't project to have any plus tools, and his defensive footwork has been widely criticized by talent evaluators.

The elder Biggio, however, also evoked tepid pre-draft scouting reports. Now he has a plaque in Cooperstown. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015, in his third year on the ballot, the catcher-turned-second-baseman spent 20 years with the Houston Astros, earning more than a few accolades - among them, seven All-Star appearances and five Silver Slugger awards - en route to becoming the second player in history with at least 3,000 hits, 250 home runs, and 400 stolen bases.
