Jackie Robinson's original contracts set for New York display
Some of baseball's most legendary pieces of paperwork will soon be on display in Times Square.
Mykalai Kontilai, a collector and proprietor of newly established auction business Collectors Cafe, purchased the four-page contract between the former Brooklyn Dodgers and MLB trailblazer Jackie Robinson in 2013, and is now planning to put them up for public viewing Monday in Times Square in New York City.
"I want to say what an honor it is for Collectors Cafe to be affiliated with the great Jackie Robinson and to share these historical documents with the American people and bring all the recognition we can to the memory and work and mission of the great Jackie Robinson," Kontilai told The Undefeated's Jesse Washington.
The contracts, valued at $36 million today, also contain the 1945 agreement between Robinson and the Dodgers' minor-league affiliate at the time, the Montreal Royals. Their authenticity has already been confirmed by renowned expert John Reznikoff.
"It passed all the tests with flying colors, everything that I looked at," Reznikoff said. "There's a lot of components to a document. There's ink, paper, printing, and everything was consistent."
Upon their public reveal, Collectors Cafe will then auction off the contracts themselves, with 10 percent of the proceeds going towards the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
