 The White Sox were swept in a four-game series in Cleveland this week and are on a season-high five-game losing streak. The White Sox's lineup had an .840 OPS in August and has a .724 OPS in September. That .116 decline is the second largest in the majors this season (SD, -.119).

 The Cubs dropped three of four games at last-place Pittsburgh and have lost five of their last six. The Cubs are last in the majors with a September slugging percentage of .321 and September OPS of .617.

 Jose Abreu bashed six home runs in the White Sox's series against the Cubs last month, the most a player has ever hit against the Cubs in a three-game series. In 27 career games against the Cubs, Abreu has a .369/.426/.718 slash line.

 Ian Happ is the Cubs' season leader in hits (49), doubles (11), home runs (12) and RBI (28). Through Sept. 5, Happ was batting .310 with a 1.093 OPS. Since Sept. 6, Happ is batting just .145 with a .409 OPS and no home runs.

 While the White Sox and Cubs enter the weekend battling for division titles, both teams have clinched playoff berths. This will be the first year since 2008 that Chicago will have both teams in the postseason.

Many socially distanced Chicago baseball fans envisioned a dazzling encounter between the Cubs and host White Sox when the truncated schedule pitted the teams against each other for the final weekend of the regular season.
To be sure, a pair of postseason bubble-bound ballclubs will be meeting at Guaranteed Rate Field, but with the Cubs and White Sox losing a combined 11 of 13 games entering Friday, this arguably feels more like a time to exhale than exclaim.

CHICAGO (AP)  Yu Darvish pitched seven strong innings for his NL-leading eighth win, Willson Contreras homered twice and the Chicago Cubs moved to the brink of clinching the NL Central title by pounding the crosstown White Sox 10-0 Friday night.
Victor Caratini, Kyle Schwarber and Javier Baez also went deep as Cubs used the longball to break out of an offensive funk and end a three-game losing streak. They reduced their magic number for securing the division crown to one game after St. Louis split a doubleheader with Milwaukee.
