 St. Louis won two of three games from the Royals at home last month, and has won eight straight road games in the series going back to 2016. That's tied for the second-longest road win streak in any interleague series all-time; the Mariners won 10 in a row at San Diego from 2006 to 2009.

 The Cardinals won the last four games of their five-game series with Pittsburgh, their longest win streak of the season. St. Louis hasn't been more than two games above or below .500 all season, the fourth team all-time make it 50 games into a year with that being true (1970 Mets, 1980 Red Sox, 2007 A's).

 Kansas City ranks 14th in the AL with 4.06 runs per game, ahead of only the Rangers (3.64). It would be the Royals' fifth straight season finishing in the bottom three of the AL in the category.

 Among American League players with at least 125 plate appearances this season, Salvador Perez ranks third in batting average (.361), third in slugging (.648) and fourth in OPS (1.025). He's hitting .444 (24/54) with four homers, 14 RBI and a 1.241 OPS in 12 interleague games in 2020.

 Paul Goldschmidt is one of two NL players currently leading his team in batting average (.309), OPS (.917) and runs scored (29), along with the Braves' Freddie Freeman. Goldschmidt hasn't hit .300 or better in a season since 2015 with Arizona (.321).

 Adam Wainwright is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in three road starts this year. He's won each of his last five road starts going back to last September, the longest active streak of its kind in the majors.

The Royals will try to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals for the second straight night Tuesday, after claiming a 4-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series Monday night at Kauffman Stadium. Matheny feels that his team has plenty to play for this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)  Austin Gomber heard longtime Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright say that his goal before pitching a complete game against Milwaukee last week was to throw no more than 12 pitches in any inning.
