 The Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Cardinals on August 27 and have won three straight dating back to the first series of the season. Pittsburgh has not won four consecutive games against St. Louis since the first four meetings of the 2018 season (six-game streak including their last two games of 2017).

 The Cardinals lost three of five games in Milwaukee and were shut out 6-0 in last game of the series. St. Louis has not been under .500 with 15 or fewer games remaining in the season since the end of the 2007 season (78-84), the last season they finished with a losing record.

 The Pirates have lost eight straight after getting swept in a four-game series in Cincinnati. Pittsburgh did not record an extra-base hit in the series finale, its seventh game without an extra-base hit this season. That is tied with St. Louis and Cleveland for the most such games in MLB this season.

 Dakota Hudson is 3-2 with a .178 opponent batting average in seven starts this season. He has won his last three starts, getting exactly seven runs of support in each game. Hudson received four runs of support in his first four starts of the season combined.

 Paul Goldschmidt has reached base in his last 16 games against the Pirates. Since joining the Cardinals last season, he is slashing .371/.481/.685 against Pittsburgh. That is the sixth-highest OBP by a current National League player against a divisional opponent since 2019 (minimum 60 plate appearances).

 Josh Bell has a 10-game hitting streak, the third of his career, with three home runs during the streak -- he had a 15-game and an 11-game hitting streak last season. Bell's 1.284 OPS since September 6 is the fourth highest in the National League over that span (minimum 25 plate appearances).

Going into the finale of their five-game series Sunday at PNC Park, the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates are in very different places.
That was on full display Saturday, starting with the Cardinals (25-24), who have a tenuous hold on second place in the National League Central and are living with every breath as if they are already in postseason mode.

Cardinals entrust Flaherty to keep ball rolling vs. Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP)  Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer and Jack Flaherty struck out 11 as the St. Louis Cardinals kept their hold on a postseason spot with a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Molina's home run to the bleachers in left field came in the seventh inning off Derek Holland and extended St. Louis' winning streak to a season-high four games. The Cardinals had been shut out by Joe Musgrove over the first six innings.
