 The Dodgers became the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season with a 7-5 win over the Padres on Wednesday. It is their eighth consecutive season making the postseason -- only two other teams in MLB history have done so: the Braves (14 straight, 1991-2005) and the Yankees (13 straight, 1995-2007).

 Since taking two out of three against the Dodgers from September 4-6, the Rockies have gone 2-6, totaling just 25 runs in the eight-game span. Colorado has gone 3-16 (.158) this season when scoring three or fewer runs compared to 19-10 (.655) when they tally four or more.

 The Dodgers had won or tied each of the previous 10 series against the Rockies before dropping two of three from September 4-6. That remains the only series loss for the Dodgers this season (12-1-4) -- every other team in baseball has lost at least three series.

 Charlie Blackmon is hitting .307 in 131 career games against the Dodgers, third best among active hitters with at least 150 plate appearances vs. Los Angeles (Joey Votto, .319; Christian Yelich, .314). However, he is just 6-for-24 (.250) with two extra-base hits in six games this season after going 24-for-60 (.400) with 11 extra-base hits last season.

 Mookie Betts has tallied at least one hit in 15 of his last 16 games with a slash line of .344/.427/.563 in that span. In four games against the Rockies this season, he is hitting .500 with three home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored.

 Kyle Freeland has gone 6.0 innings in back-to-back starts, allowing two earned runs in total. They were his seventh and eighth quality starts this season, one off the MLB lead of nine held by Shane Bieber, Yu Darvish and Lance Lynn.

Nolan Arenado challenged himself and his Colorado Rockies teammates when he said Tuesday that it would be unacceptable for them not to be one of the eight National League teams to make the postseason.
"If we're not one of those eight teams, that's not a very good sign," the third baseman said. "Our goal is to get in the playoffs every year, but with eight teams, we've got to find a way to fight to get in."

Rockies look to salvage season against first-place Dodgers

DENVER (AP)  Corey Seager homered and had three hits, Edwin Rios also went deep and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the struggling Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Thursday night.
Mookie Betts had an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch during Los Angeles' six-run seventh inning that put the Dodgers ahead 8-2. Los Angeles is 36-15, best in baseball, and increased its lead in the NL West to four games over idle San Diego with nine games remaining for each teams.
