 The Pirates and Reds have split the first six meetings this season, including the two games in Cincinnati in mid-August. Cincinnati has outscored Pittsburgh, 29-21, in the six games despite the even record, with the Pirates last two wins over the Reds coming by one run.

 Cincinnati beat the Cardinals, 10-5, on Sunday in St. Louis, continuing a trend of alternating wins and losses over the last six games. The Reds have just two winning streaks over their last 32 games, a three-game run on August 27-28 (including a doubleheader sweep over Milwaukee) and wins over the Cardinals and Pirates on September 2 and 4.

 The Pirates have dropped four straight games after being swept in Kansas City over the weekend. They've been outscored, 30-8, over those four games, with the -22 run differential their worst over a four-game span since September 18-21 last season (also -22).

 Ke'Bryan Hayes has a .344/.400/.594 slash line since making his MLB debut on September 1. His .994 OPS this month ranks first among National League rookies, and third among MLB rookies (minimum 30 PA).

 Eugenio Suarez recorded his first career three-homer game against Pittsburgh on September 5. He leads all players with 19 home runs versus the Pirates since the start of the 2015 season; his 61 RBI against them over that span ranks second to the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo (71).

For weeks, the Cincinnati Reds have been vocal about being on a concerted mission to get into the postseason. Right now, they are approaching that threshold by showing no mercy to the reeling Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Reds (23-26) have won three straight after sweeping a doubleheader Monday against the visiting Pirates 3-1 and 9-4. They can clinch a win in the four-game series with a win Tuesday.

Rolling Reds in position to win series with Pirates

CINCINNATI (AP)  Tucker Barnhart hit a home run and Brian Goodwin prevented one with a leaping catch as the Cincinnati Reds extended their winning streak to a season-high four games with a 4-1 victory Tuesday night over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Michael Lorenzen (2-1) looked sharp in a spot start, helping Cincinnati inch closer to a playoff spot. The third-place Reds went into the game higher than fourth in the NL Central for the first time since Aug. 23. They were 1 1/2 games behind second-place St. Louis and ninth in the overall National League standings, one game behind the Giants for the final postseason berth.
