 After the Royals won 12 of 20 meetings between the teams from 1997 through 2006, the Pirates have a 9-3 record versus KC beginning with the 2009 campaign. The clubs last met in a three-game set at PNC Park in September 2018, in which Pittsburgh won each game by a single run.

 The Pirates continue to bring their team batting average up. After posting a .177 mark in July and a .228 average in August, the Bucs have started September hitting .245 through nine games. Still, the Bucs rank 28th in MLB with a .223 batting average and last in home-run rate at 0.85 per game.

 After losing their series opener on Labor Day at Cleveland, the Royals defeated the Indians in the next three games.  The Royals and Pirates are two of six clubs whose team leaders in batting average (among qualifiers) are hitting under.280. Maikel Franco's .271 mark is the third lowest by any team's leading hitter, and Erik Gonzalez has the sixth-lowest average among team leaders at .280.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)  Brad Keller pitched his first major league shutout, tossing a five-hitter as the Kansas City Royals won their sixth in a row by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-0 on Sunday.
Keller (4-2) was in total command, allowing only three hits until the ninth inning.
