The Cardinals took three of four from the Reds in their first meeting of the season from Aug. 20-23, limiting Cincinnati to 17 hits. It matches the fewest hits St. Louis pitchers have allowed in a four-game series in the live-ball era, along with the 17 hits the Cards permitted to Pittsburgh from May 7-10, 2001.

The Reds' .216 batting average is third worst in MLB, while their 53 home runs rank fifth in the majors. Their 23.5 percent of hits going for homers leads the majors and is the best in franchise history, beating out last season's 17.1 percent. The Cardinals' 11.1 percent of hits going for home runs is second worst in MLB, beating out only the Diamondbacks' 10.2 percent.

Cincinnati is 4-6 since Aug. 22, scoring six runs in each of those victories while batting .325, compared to totaling seven runs in those six losses while hitting .153. They are 9-1 when collecting at least nine hits in a game, and that .900 winning percentage trails only Tampa Bay's .923 (12-1) for the best in MLB in games with nine or more hits.

Jesse Winker is batting .400 with four homers, two doubles and seven RBI in his last six games but is 2-for-14 (.143) in four contests vs. the Cardinals this year. He has a 1.528 OPS with nobody on and nobody out -- the best in MLB among the 144 batters with at least 25 plate appearances in such situations.

Sonny Gray, who is scheduled to start Tuesday, tossed six innings of two-run ball against St. Louis on Aug. 20, and has a 1.59 ERA in four starts against the Cardinals with Cincinnati. Gray is the first Reds pitcher to allow two or fewer runs while throwing at least five innings in each of his first four starts against St. Louis with Cincinnati since Jose Rijo had five such starts in a row from 1989-92.

Paul Goldschmidt, MLB's leader in OBP at .461, has a .240/.348/.373 slash line in 22 games against the Reds since 2019 compared to slashing .319/.411/.598 against the rest of the NL Central. Since 2019, he has a 37.50 AB/HR ratio against Cincinnati compared to a 13.21 against the other NL Central teams.

CINCINNATI (AP)  Paul DeJong slugged his first career grand slam, helping Dakota Hudson to his first win of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals held on to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series.
The Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning on Kolten Wong's single and walks by Paul Goldschmidt and Brad Miller. DeJong capitalized, sending Anthony DeSclafani's full count pitch over the center field fence for his second homer of the season.
