 This will be Detroit's first game since a doubleheader versus the Reds on August 2, as they have not played due to COVID-19 concerns. The Tigers are 5-5, in fourth place in the AL Central and they have lost three of their last four games.

 The Pirates snapped a seven-game losing streak with a walkoff hit by Kevin Newman over Minnesota yesterday. Newman has five walkoff RBI since last season -- no other player has more than three such RBI.

 Pittsburgh is 11-3 against Detroit since 2017, its best record against any opponent with a minimum of 10 meetings. The Pirates, however, are just 1-7 in their last eight interleague games, allowing 5.6 runs per game.

 JaCoby Jones has hit at the bottom of the order in nine of Detroit's 10 games this season -- he is hitting .379 with a 1.212 OPS in that spot. Both lead MLB among players with at least 20 plate appearances in the ninth spot this season.

 Chad Kuhl will make his first start since June 26, 2018 - Steven Brault has opened for the two games where Kuhl has pitched this season. Kuhl and Brault have a combined 0.90 ERA this season and have held opponents to a .235 slugging percentage. The rest of the Pirates have a 4.82 ERA and .408 opponent slugging.

 The Tigers' trio of Buck Farmer, John Schreiber and Gregory Soto have allowed no runs and just two hits (2-for-45) in a combined 13 appearances this season. The rest of Detroit's bullpen has a 6.30 ERA and have allowed a .280 opponent batting average.

Detroit pulled out a wild 17-13 win over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday in the first game of a weekend series. The Tigers will look to keep their offense firing in the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday.

Tigers, Pirates ready for rematch after slugfest

PITTSBURGH (AP)  Maybe the Detroit Tigers should get four unexpected days off more often. Or maybe they should just face a pitching staff in tatters.
Either way, Detroit's struggling offense has found traction in Pittsburgh. Niko Goodrum, Miguel Cabrera, C.J. Cron and Jeimer Candelario all hit home runs in the first inning against Pirates starter Derek Holland as the Tigers drilled the Pirates 11-5 on Saturday.
