The Mets started the season 3-2, then dropped five straight and won the fourth game of a four-game series last night in Atlanta, 7-2. Mets left-handed batters are hitting .309 this season, while the right-handed batters are hitting just .219.

Last season, the Nationals started 3-4 with a .240 team batting average, and in 2020, they have started 3-4 with a .244 team batting average. One big difference is the bullpen. In last season's first seven games, the bullpen had a 10.02 ERA in 20.2 innings of work, while this season the relievers have a 1.50 ERA in 24.0 IP.

WASHINGTON (AP)  Max Scherzer is the type who is going to try to play if he possibly can, even on a tweaked right hamstring that prevents him from driving his lower body into his pitches.
So the three-time Cy Young Award winner gave it a shot Wednesday night for the Washington Nationals against the New York Mets. It was clear right away -- to him and his catcher, pitching coach, manager -- that the usual power and command were missing.
