 The Twins set a major-league record with 307 home runs last season, with an average of one HR per 18.7 at-bats. That's an entire team hitting home runs for an entire season at virtually the same rate as the career averages of Mel Ott (one HR per 18.5 AB), Roger Maris (18.5), or Miguel Cabrera (18.8).

 Rocco Baldelli was the third manager in the last two seasons to win at least 100 regular-season games in his first season in the majors (101--61), joining Alex Cora (108--54 in 2018) and Aaron Boone (100--62 in 2018). Only four other managers had done so in the previous 100 seasons: Mickey Cochrane, Tigers (101--53 in 1934); Ralph Houk, Yankees (109--53 in 1961); Sparky Anderson, Reds (102--60 in 1970); and Dusty Baker, Giants (103--59 in 1993).

 Yasmani Grandal drew 107 walks in 2019, including 91 as a catcher (15 as 1B, 3 as PH). That's the most walks as a catcher in a single season since Jorge Posada walked 95 times in 2000.

 Mitch Garver hit 31 home runs in 93 games last season. Only two other players in MLB history hit as many as 30 homers in a season while playing fewer than 100 games: Mark McGwire, 32 HR in 89 games in 2000 and Kevin Mitchell, 30 HR in 95 games in the strike-shortened 1994 season.

 Lucas Giolito ranked seventh in the AL with an average of 4.00 strikeouts per walk last season. In 2018, Giolito ranked last in that category among the 58 ERA qualifiers in the majors (1.39 SO/BB). That helped produce a year-over-year decline in his ERA from 6.13 to 3.41.

CHICAGO (AP)  Max Kepler homered against White Sox ace Lucas Giolito in his first two at-bats and the Minnesota Twins beat Chicago 10-5 on Friday night in the clubs' first game of a 60-game season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic.
''Now that we have 60 games, we've really got to get our swings in early,'' Kepler said. ''I was ready.''
