 This season marks the 80th anniversary of the 1940 World Series between the Reds and Tigers. Cincinnati won Game 7, 2--1, scoring twice in the 7th inning off Bobo Newsom, who had pitched a three-hit shutout just two days earlier. That was the last of the 18 World Series worked by Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem.

 The Tigers lost 114 games last season, seventh most in a single season in MLB history and fourth most in the history of the American League. That record belongs to the 2003 Tigers, who finished at 43-119.

 Ron Gardenhire has lost at least 90 games in each of his last six seasons as a manager—four with the Twins (2011--14) and the last two with Detroit. He never lost 90 games in any of his first nine seasons, going 803-656 from 2002-10; the only managers with more wins during that time were Joe Torre (850--607), Mike Scioscia (823--635) and Tony La Russa (811--646).

 Joey Votto is the leader among active players with a .421 career on-base percentage (min. 3000 PA). He enters the season with 1180 walks, 30 short of Pete Rose's all-time team record. Votto also ranks fourth in extra-base hits for Cincinnati with 708, trailing Rose (868), Johnny Bench (794) and Barry Larkin (715).

 Sonny Gray ranked fifth in the NL with a 2.87 ERA last season. He was the first Reds pitcher to finish in the top 10 since Johnny Cueto ranked second with a 2.25 mark in 2014, behind Clayton Kershaw (1.77).

 Matthew Boyd allowed 39 home runs last season, second only to Mike Leake (41). That's tied with Jack Morris in 1987 for the third-most home runs allowed in franchise history -- only Denny McLain (42 in 1966) and Morris (40 in 1986) have allowed more.

Reds open with high hopes vs. rebuilding Tigers

CINCINNATI (AP)  Mike Moustakas drove in four runs in an emphatic first impression, teaming with fellow Cincinnati newcomers Shogo Akiyama and Nick Castellanos to turn the Reds' long-delayed opener into a 7-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
The Reds tried to make themselves relevant again by spending $165 million on free agents in the offseason. Moustakas and Castellanos each got $64 million as cornerstones of the rebuild.
