 St. Louis has won nine of the 13 games against Pittsburgh this season, including each of the last five. The Cardinals need just one more win over the Pirates to secure their sixth straight season series win.

 The Pirates have lost each of their last eight series dating back to the All-Star break with an MLB-worst 4-21 record. They are the seventh team in MLB history to lose eight straight series coming out of the All-Star break and first to do so since the 2012 Astros.

ST. LOUIS (AP)  In the big leagues primarily as a defensive replacement, Cardinals rookie outfielder Lane Thomas pounced with a chance to flex his hitting muscles.
Thomas ripped a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning, Paul Goldschmidt and Dexter Fowler also homered, and St. Louis beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-9 Sunday.
