The Indians have won six of their last seven against the Royals after losing four of the first five meetings. The Royals swept the Indians in the teams' first meeting this season from April 12-14 in Kansas City, but returned the favor with a three-game sweep in their next visit from July 2-4.

After taking two of three in Toronto, Cleveland has improved to 14-4 (.778) in July, second best in MLB behind San Francisco (16-4). Should the Indians maintain this pace, it would mark the best July win percentage in franchise history (min. 15 games); the current record is 22-8 (.733) in 1951.

Since being swept by the Indians in a three-game series in which they were outscored 21-9, the Royals have won six of their last seven home games, averaging 7.0 runs per game. Their .330 batting average at home since the All-Star break is highest in MLB; however, Cleveland's .156 opponent average on the road in that span is the lowest in MLB.

Francisco Lindor stole his 15th bag of the season on Wednesday in Toronto, securing his fourth straight season with 15+ home runs and 15+ stolen bases. He joins Alex Rodriguez (six straight), Derek Jeter (five straight), and Hanley Ramirez (five straight) as the only shortstops in history to do so in 4+ straight seasons.

Adam Plutko will get the start for the Indians after suffering a 1-0 loss in his last start - also against the Royals - on July 20, allowing the game's only run on a first-inning home run by Hunter Dozier. He joins Josh Tomlin (May 12, 2017) and Steve Woodard (July 29, 2000) as the only Indians starters in the Wild-Card era (since 1994) to take a 1-0 loss after allowing a first-inning solo home run.

Mike Montgomery will make his second start for the Royals after allowing five runs on six hits in just two innings on July 19 in Cleveland. He's allowed 7 earned runs in three innings against the Indians since the start of last season after allowing just one run on six hits in 11 innings prior to last season, including five relief appearances in the 2016 World Series.

When Jakob Junis takes the mound Friday for the Kansas City Royals against the Cleveland Indians, he'll try to be the second Junis to deliver this week.
Junis (6-8, 4.83 ERA) will return from MLB's paternity list after being with his wife, Brianne, who gave birth to their son, Jett Boyd. The couple also has 4-year-old twins. He'll face Cleveland's Zach Plesac (4-3, 3.50) in the second game of a four-game series.
