The Astros are tied for the AL lead in wins with 37 with one game to play this month. Of the previous nine teams to have 37 or more wins before June 1, all nine made the playoffs and five won the World Series (2018 Red Sox, 2017 Astros, 2014 Giants, 1998 Yankees and 1984 Tigers).

The Athletics lost their last two games to the Angels, snapping a span of 10 straight wins (not including a suspended game on May 19). They allowed six and 12 runs in the two losses after never allowing more than five runs during the winning streak.

Houston has won four of the first five games against Oakland this season, scoring 5.60 runs per game. The Astros are 32-9 against the A's in games from March through June since 2015 compared to 19-21 in games from July through September.

The A's trailed the Astros by 9 1/2 games two weeks ago before winning 10 in a row. They lost their last two games to the Los Angeles Angels and currently stand 7 1/2 back of Houston, the defending division champ.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)  With several key stars sidelined by injuries, the Houston Astros relied on some lesser-known fill-ins who were in the minors just a week ago.
Derek Fisher hit a tiebreaking homer to lead off the eighth inning after pinch-runner Myles Straw and defensive replacement Jack Mayfield made key plays in the seventh to help the short-handed Astros rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.
