The Athletics and Pirates will face off for the first time since July 2016. Oakland won the first 10 matchups of the all-time interleague series but Pittsburgh has won each of the last four.

The A's were swept by the Red Sox earlier this week and have now lost seven straight road games. The only other team to lose at least seven straight road games this year is Cincinnati (also seven straight).

The Pirates won two games against the Rangers this week and have won all four of their interleague games this season. They are 17-5 in interleague matchups since 2018, best record in MLB.

Khris Davis was the first MLB player to reach 10 home runs this season; he did so in his 17th game on April 12. Since April 13, Davis has zero home runs and the fifth-lowest slugging percentage in baseball at .236 (minimum 50 PA).

Josh Bell has recorded an extra-base hit in five of his last seven games with a double in each of his last three. Bell is one of five MLB players to lead his team outright in home runs (six), RBI (21) and walks (13) this season.

Since rejoining the Athletics last season, Brett Anderson has a 2.38 ERA in Oakland but a 5.86 ERA on the road. He has started two games in Pittsburgh in his career with a 1.38 ERA.

Pittsburgh and Oakland had not met since 2016, but the A's probably could use a couple more cracks at the host Pirates considering the way the opener of their weekend series went.
Oakland broke a six-game losing streak Friday with a 14-1 win behind 16 hits after entering the game with an anemic .237 team batting average. Even worse, the A's had not only lost the first six games of this nine-game road trip, but they also had scored only 15 runs and hit .167 in those six games.

Oakland hopes to extend fun in visit to Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (AP)  Kevin Newman expected to be part of a platoon at shortstop with Erik Gonzalez when he made the Pittsburgh Pirates out of spring training. A cut to the middle finger of his right hand a month ago sent Newman to the injured list instead.
Gonzalez soon joined Newman on the injured list with a broken collarbone and the arrival of top prospect Cole Tucker during their absence forced the Pirates to re-evaluate how they wanted to use Newman when he returned.
