 The Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 16-1 in Game 3, recording the largest margin of victory for a road team in MLB playoff history and saddling New York with its largest ever postseason loss in 396 games. Brock Holt recorded the first cycle ever in postseason play, capping his 4-for-6 night with a two-run home run off catcher Austin Romine, who was just the second position player ever to pitch in the playoffs. The first was Cliff Pennington for the Blue Jays in Game 4 of the 2015 ALDS.

 Every Red Sox player who started, recorded a hit, and every starter except J.D. Martinez (1-for-3, 2 RBI) scored a run. It was the third time ever that every Boston starter recorded a hit in a postseason game against the Yankees, and the first time since Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS.

 Six different Yankee pitchers allowed at least one earned run and recorded at least one walk yesterday, a first in MLB postseason history. When trailing 2-1 in a best-of-five playoff series, the Yankees have won Game 4 five times in eight chances, however they have won just three of the eight series overall. Boston is 2-0 in best-of-five series when up 2-1, finishing both series with a victory in Game 4.

 Rick Porcello has a 5.85 ERA and a .300 opponent average as a starter in the playoffs, and his teams have lost each of his four career postseason starts. Over his last six starts against the Yankees, Porcello has a 2.04 ERA while limiting them to a .185 batting average.

 CC Sabathia will be making his 23rd career postseason start, breaking a tie with Jon Lester and Justin Verlander for most among active pitchers. Sabathia faced the Red Sox in the playoffs twice as a member of the Cleveland Indians in the 2007 ALCS, posting two losses, a 10.45 ERA, and a .405 opponent average. In 11 career starts in the ALDS, Sabathia is 6-0 with a 3.32 ERA, and his teams are 8-3.

 With two runs yesterday, Mookie Betts has now scored 25 runs against the Yankees this season (reg & post), most ever by a Red Sox player against the Yankees in a season. He was previously tied with Tris Speaker (1913) and Ted Williams (1941) prior to Game 3. Betts was 5-for-7 in the regular season against Sabathia in 2018, and owns a .429/.514/.536 slash line in 35 career plate appearances against the lefty.

NEW YORK -- New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone experienced a rough night in Game 3 while Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora saw his decisions work out perfectly.
While Boone appeared to wait too long to get Luis Severino out of the game when the right-hander's command was lacking, Cora opted to insert Brock Holt into the lineup at second base and start Nathan Eovaldi.
