 This will be the 43rd season that these longtime rivals will close their seasons against one another but just the fourth time in the wild card era. The last time a season-closing set between the Cubs and Cardinals saw both teams having clinched the playoffs or with a chance to make the playoffs was in 1935.

 The Cardinals were swept at home by the Brewers, dropping them one game behind the Dodgers for the second wild card spot. St. Louis has a 4-12 record at the Friendly Confines over the past two seasons.

 The last time he visited Wrigley Field, Matt Carpenter clubbed six home runs and two doubles in a five-game set with the Cubs. Since that series, Carpenter has seven home runs and nine doubles in 28 road games and just one extra-base hit of any kind in his last nine.

 The Cubs are tied with the Red Sox for the most comeback wins (47) this season. If they manage to rack up two more such wins against St. Louis, they will tie their franchise high in the live-ball era (1929 and 1998).

 Javier Baez is batting .345 with five home runs against the Cardinals this season. The last Cub to better both of those marks against the Redbirds in a single season was Derrek Lee in 2005 (.393 average and 6 home runs).

 RHP Adam Wainwright won his only game against the Cubs this season, allowing no earned runs in 5.0 innings of work in Chicago. He has a career 11-2 record in 19 starts at Wrigley Field. The Cubs head into Sunday's regular-season finale tied for the first place in the division with the Milwaukee Brewers, who erased a one-game deficit in the standings with a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.
