The Giants lead the season series with the Dodgers, nine games to seven, despite the Dodgers leading in overall runs scored, 59-51. The Dodgers have scored 5.26 runs per game on the road, best mark in the NL, while the Giants hold a 3.42 ERA at home which is second lowest in the NL behind LAD (3.14).

The Giants lost two of three against the Padres in their last series and are an MLB-worst 5-18 (.217) in September. No Giant has driven in 10 runs this month. Since RBI became an official stat in 1920, there has never been a September with no Giant reaching double figures in RBI.

The Dodgers currently trail Colorado by one game in the NL West and lead St. Louis by one game for the last NL wild card spot. They are bidding for a sixth consecutive playoff appearance. Manny Machado has been a key piece for the Dodgers since joining the team at the All-Star break. He is batting .304 with an OPS of .941 in Dodger wins but just .214 with an OPS of .645 in Dodger losses.

Madison Bumgarner made his 250th career start on September 15. He has the sixth lowest ERA by any pitcher in the divisional era with at least 250 starts. Bumgarner is 15-10 in his career against LAD; only one other pitcher has double-digit wins against them since 2009 (Jhoulys Chacin, 11-9).

Despite pitching just 76.1 innings this season, Hyun-Jin Ryu has put up a 2.00 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP. Among pitchers with at least that many innings and 10 starts, only Cy Young candidates Jacob deGrom (1.70) and Blake Snell (1.90) have a lower ERA.
