The Indians enter this series after dropping back-to-back road series against the Cardinals and Athletics. Cleveland, however, managed 15 runs in its win yesterday against Oakland, more runs than the team had scored in its previous five games combined (10).

The Royals were swept by the Mariners in three games, and have an MLB-worst 5-22 (.185) record since June 1. Only one time in franchise history have the Royals had a worse 27-game span than this; when they went 4-23 (.148) in July and August of 2005.

With Edwin Encarnacion's 20th home run yesterday, the Indians became the first team this season with three players with at least 20 home runs (Jose Ramirez -- 24, Francisco Lindor -- 21, Encarnacion -- 20).

Corey Kluber is coming off the shortest start of his career, in which he allowed six earned runs and two home runs in 1.2 innings in an 11-2 loss at St. Louis. In seven starts against the AL Central this season, Kluber is 6-1 with a 1.32 ERA with 51 strikeouts compared to five walks.

In his last four starts, Jakob Junis has an 8.31 ERA while allowing 10 home runs over that span. Only Josh Tomlin (11 HR) has allowed more home runs in a four-start span this season.

The Indians hit 11 doubles in their 15-3 victory at Oakland, with Yonder Alonso, Lonnie Chisenhall, Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez each hitting two apiece. They became the first team with four players with multiple doubles in a game since the Astros on September 12, 2003.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)  Trevor Bauer made plenty of quality pitches, but it was Cleveland catcher Roberto Perez who made the best throw of the night.
Bauer pitched effectively into the eighth inning as the Indians beat the skidding Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep.
