The Astros took two of three games from the Rays at home earlier this month, posting a 2.00 ERA while allowing just 16 hits with 32 strikeouts. Tampa Bay, though, hasn't lost a season series to Houston since 2008.

Houston rallied from a five-run deficit for a 7-6 victory over the Blue Jays yesterday to win its sixth straight series. The Astros haven't won seven consecutive series in a single season since taking nine in a row in 2005.

The Rays beat Max Scherzer and the Nationals 1-0 on Tuesday for their fifth straight win overall and eighth in a row at home. They have outscored opponents 38-12 during the eight-game run, the franchise's longest at Tropicana Field since capturing nine consecutive in 2013.

Evan Gattis drove in three runs in yesterday's win setting an Astros record for most RBI in June with 30. He passed Jimmy Wynn (1967) and Jose Cruz (1984) who both had 29. Gattis' 30 RBI this month are the most in the majors.

Ryne Stanek will be making his 20th appearance and eighth start for the Rays this season. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 appearances (five starts) and opponents are batting .095 (4-for-42) against him during that span

Houston's +174 run differential is the fifth-best through 82 games in AL history. The Astros lead the majors in runs (426) and ERA (2.85), and are on pace to become just the fifth team in the last 100 years to lead in both categories.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays continue to win games they perhaps shouldn't, and they'll have an opportunity for more of that Saturday against Houston's Justin Verlander.
The Rays (40-41) hit the midway point of their 2018 season with a 3-2 win over Houston, giving them six wins in their last seven games. Their pitching has led the way -- three times in the last four games, they have held their opponent to three hits or less, this after doing so only three times in the first 77 games of this season.

Scrappy Rays face challenge of Verlander, Astros

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)  Justin Verlander's worst start with the Houston Astros might have been OK if not for Wilson Ramos.
Ramos drove in four runs in the first two innings against Verlander and the Tampa Bay Rays went on to a 5-2 win over the Astros on Saturday.
